An apron sink is also known as a farmhouse sink. It is roomier and deeper compared to other types of kitchen sink. Copper kitchen sinks rendered in the apron sink design are well-suited for home kitchens decorated to look like the traditional country kitchen.
Installing an apron is pretty straightforward, after you have taken into consideration several aspects unique to apron sinks. First, an apron sink has a prominent front panel that projects from the front of the kitchen counter. Second, an apron sink easily weighs about 100 pounds on its own. Since the capacity of an average kitchen sink allows it to contain a lot of items, an apron sink needs additional support underneath the kitchen cabinet. Braces are typically attached on the underside of an apron sink, so that not all of its weight rests on the kitchen cabinets.
Once these considerations have been attended to, here is how to install an apron sink:
First, turn off the water supply to the kitchen faucets. Using the template provided by the manufacturer, cut out the slot where the apron sink will be placed on the countertop. Use a circular saw for wood composites; granite and stone countertops are more difficult to cut, and may require the assistance of a professional.
Set the apron sink within the intended slot, and check that the braces underneath do carry the weight load, not the kitchen cabinets. With silicone caulk, seal the edges and gaps between the apron sink and the countertop. Hold the nozzle against the surface at a 45 degree angle, and apply the caulk in one smooth continuous motion from one end to another.
With a moistened sponge, smooth down the caulking so that it lies flat and even. Ensure that all crevices are sealed to prevent water leakage underneath the sink. This could lead to water damage and encourages the growth of mold and mildew.
Install the faucet through the pre-drilled holes or through the wall, if it is a wall-mounted faucet.
Attach any other plumbing hardware to your sink such as sprayer attachments or garbage disposal. Turn the water supply back on.
