I’m one of those people who have been intrigued by the idea of a portable ebook reader for some time. As someone in business I read a lot of PDF’s and documents that are printed off and discarded after only being read once or twice. So the thought of having them available when I need them and then deleting when finished really appealed to me. I am now able to carry my entire library with me at all times on my kindle reader.
First Impressions
The first thing that struck me about the portable ebook reader was how slim it was, only 9mm. I’d seen the Amazon photo showing it sideways next to a pencil, but seeing it for myself made me realise how incredibly sleek the Kindle reader is. The other thing I noticed was that the protective sticker on the screen explaining how to charge up my Kindle was just a transparent film & the writing was the actual Kindle reader display. I’d never seen an eBook reader before, so I thought people were over hyping when they claimed electronic Ink looked just like a paper, guess what, they weren’t.
Getting to Grips
I charged my Kindle portable ebook reader and started to play with the settings. I expected setting up the wireless connection to be tricky, but my network was detected immediately, I just needed my password, quick & pain-free. I started testing it with some free downloads, I was really impressed with the download speed. I’d heard negative feedback about how loud previous generation Kindles readers were and that it took too long to load pages, I didn’t feel either were a problem. In fact, I was impressed with how quiet it was. Next it was time to try out the browser; again I was impressed by just how crisp the pages were. Even without zooming in the tiniest text was crisp & clear.
Document and PDF transfer
When setting up a PDF file on the portable ebook reader I expected a lengthy delay, but within 2 minutes of e-mailing my PDF it was available. I also manually loaded a PDF via the USB lead. I found it very useful to rotate the screen 90 degrees to fit the document to width in order to read more easily. I also liked how using the shift key and direction button gently nudged the PDF in the required direction – very nice indeed. I liked being able to open the menu & have it tell me what all the highlighted parts or notes of the document were on the kindle reader.
MP3s and Text to Speech
I added a few songs to my portable ebook reader just to test the sound quality. I didn’t expect that sound quality from such a tiny device. The text-to-speech function was much better than expected. I was expecting a really flat, monotone voice and was pleasantly surprised. I also really liked being able to use the cursor to select where to start reading from, a nice addition.
Finally
All in all I am really impressed with the newest Kindle reader. It holds 3,500 books and documents. You can download from over 100 countries. It’s thin, light, and very easy to read and with all my business documents loaded I take my entire library with me wherever I go, I wouldn’t be without it.
